Arzbach 2009

On the 27th May, 3 teams from the Under 9’s, 10’s, 11's & 12’s boys age groups from the Club, along with a number of Parents, set off from Droitwich to Arzbach, Germany to participate in the Arzbach Sports Association Youth Soccer Tournament during Whitsuntide. Flying from Birmingham International Airport and arriving at Hahn, the English squad was met by the bus driver who then took them to the Mosel Valley town of Cochem, giving them the opportunity to visit the Gothic Imperial Castle and shop amongst the medieval squares and timber framed buildings before arriving at 5pm at the Limeshalle (sports centre) in Arzbach. All the English delegates were met by the host families and were fed a scrumptious and bountiful buffet of local delicacies.

A visit to the Phantasialand theme park at Bruhl, near Koln on Thursday was enjoyed by the entire group. On Friday teams of the Parents and boys participated in a Dorf Rally (Treasure Hunt) which took place in and around the Arzbach area, undertaking some sporting games, challenges in local shops and getting at one with nature and finally meeting at the local Romerklause for fine food and plenty of party atmosphere.

The weekend played host to the International Youth Tournament where the U 9's played on Saturday afternoon and it was a full day on Sunday for the rest of the squads. All the Spa teams played well in some very close matches but did not quite get past the quarter final stages. Not wanting to be left out, the Parents decided to play matches, with both Mums and Dads from both countries participating.

All the games were played in a competitive but sporting manner and all the teams thoroughly enjoyed their football, playing to an international audience.

During Sunday evening a celebration supper was held after the soccer tournaments with speeches given by the organisers from both Arzbach & Droitwich giving praise and thanks for everyone's involvement.

A most wonderful experience was had by all those that participated in this year’s trip and the Droitwich Spa Club very much welcome the opportunity of hosting a delegation from Arzbach next year. Once again, many new friendships were made and existing friendships deepened.
