Here come the Ladies - Droitwich Spa Ladies Football Team Becomes a Reality (Sept 11)

Droitwich Spa Boys and Girls Football Club are delighted that fairly late in the day before the start of the new season they have succeeded in their aim in establishing a women's football team in the town.

This adds to their ranks of the club’s successful girl's teams which cover all ages from under 10 to under 17.

Formed from a nucleus of players from a former Worcestershire club, Hornets FC and past players returning to the club this will be the first time in over 5 years the town will have a ladies team.

Droitwich Spa Ladies FC are now ready to compete in the Herefordshire and Worcestershire County League for the 2011 -2012 season.

The Droitwich Spa Ladies Team will be coached by Ian Fry an experienced football coach in female football at all levels for over 8 years. Ian is due to attain his FA level 2 badge in month’s time.
The team will play their home matches at King Georges Droitwich Spa, kicking off Sunday afternoons at 2:30pm.

Jon Glover Girls and Women’s Football Co-ordinator says; ‘We obviously believe this is a great, positive community initiative and are encouraging any existing or interested players in the area to make contact and come and find out about our aims as we plan to extend the existing squad’.

‘This initiative has taken an enormous amount of effort on the part of a great many people: Ian, club officials, Sam Spencer a former player and coach, Worcestershire FA and the ex Hornets players so it’s fantastic news we are able to announce that this has come to fruition.’

Spa Girls Trial For England - (Updated Feb 2011)

England Trialists

Lucy Solloway & Holly Smith attended the English Schools’ U15s girls International Trials in Telford on 21st & 22nd February and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of training and playing with around 35 of the best players in England. The standard was exceptionally high and both girls coped comfortably with the challenge. With just 16 places available in the final squad, the team Manager indicated that the selection process would be a difficult one as all girls performed extremely well. Unfortunately Lucy and Holly were not successful on this occasion, but they were proud to be able to represent Droitwich Spa Boys & Girls FC, and their County, at such a high level – their attitude and performance is to be congratulated as they were both a huge credit to grass roots football.

Background
to our Girls Football

For more than 10 years now the club has included a girls section and we adopted the fairly lengthy club title ‘Droitwich Spa Boys and Girls Football Club’. A decade later we have nearly 70 girls playing for the club at all ages from 9 to 15 with teams in every age group of the Mercian Mini and Youth Football Leagues.
At all age groups our girls teams have been involved in the supporting the establishment of Worcestershire FA’s (WFA) new Player Development Centre (PDC). DSBGFC Girls footballThis is a true testimony to their skills, talent and potential as footballers and an excellent measure of our good relations with the WFA.
In spite of a predilection to choose team names from animals noted for their stealth, tenacity and aggression the pleasure of watching the Droitwich girls’ teams play football is mainly down to their honest endeavour and over-riding sense of fun.

Boys  v Girls - What’s the Difference

As coaches of a girls football team one of the most common questions we’re used to being asked is:
‘So what’s the difference between coaching boy’s football team and girl’s football team?’
Well you won’t be surprised there has been lots of study with a fair measure of theory and opinion on the subject.
For my part, the best answer I can give you is to come along to St Peter’s or King Georges on a Saturday morning to watch the: Vixens, Sharks, Leopards, Wildcats, Terriers and Lions, to find out for yourself.
I can guarantee you that it will be immensely enjoyable to watch and a refreshing view of the high quality of competitive football played by our girls and the teams they play against.

A team thing

We have been extremely fortunate in spite of these tough times to find great sponsorship for all of our girl’s teams, this has played a very significant part in providing kit and training gear. Hopefully in return we can provide some excellent and positive promotion for their brands and services.
An integral part of the enjoyment and success the girl’s teams attain is down to the parents, relatives and supporters. It’s not just about being there to shout the team on, but also the practical stuff such as: assembling/dissembling goals and ‘respect’ barriers, handling team admin on behalf of the coach through to helping to organise activities to celebrate the team’s endeavours.

As parent myself of two girl footballers and a coach, the active involvement of our ‘soccer parents’ as the FA describes them is priceless.

The Future
Over the years the Droitwich Spa Girls teams have attained more than their fair share of honours in cup and title success many of them you will find listed on the various team sections on this website.
More by happy accident than design, a number of things have occurred recently which I personally believe should help develop and improve the girls section of the club and they fall into three broad areas:Girls footbal

The present situation is extremely positive, however the transient nature of a club like ours built on dedicated volunteers means we can’t  stand still and therefore need to look at all aspects of the spectrum in the future development of girls football for Droitwich Spa Boys and Girls FC.
I hope those of you who haven’t been before come along and watch our girl’s football teams play, like I said it’s a very rich and rewarding experience.
And finally...Best wishes and good luck to all our girls, coaches, and ‘soccer parents’ this season

Arzbach

Visit of S.V. Arzbach, Germany to Droitwich Spa Boys & Girls F.C.

On Wednesday 3RD June, 15 children from age 6 to 13 along with their parents arrived from Arzbach, Germany to participate in Droitwich Spa Boys & Girls Football Clubs Football Festival which was being held at Crowle Village Hall.  Flying into Birmingham International Airport on Wednesday evening, the German guests were collected by a coach and taken to Sacred Heart Church Hall, Droitwich where they were welcomed by their host families.

A visit to Stratford upon Avon on Thursday was enjoyed by the entire group. On Friday, 6 teams of parents and children participated in a Treasure Hunt which took place in and around Droitwich, undertaking some sporting challenges as well as paddling in canoes from Vines Park to King Georges Playing Fields.  Each team finally met at the Hungary Horse for fine food and plenty of party atmosphere.

Saturday played host to the Football Festival which included teams from S.V. Arzbach, Droitwich Spa Boys & Girls F.C. and Crowle Football Youth Club.  All the games were played in a competitive but sporting manner and were enjoyed by players and audience alike.  The youngest age group from S.V. Arzbach won the Cup and was presented with a trophy for their outstanding performance.  The International Visitors were introduced to ‘Tug-of-War’ , and although they had never participated in the game before, entered into the spirit of it and pulled with all their might.

During Sunday evening a celebration supper was held with speeches given by the organisers from both Arzbach & Droitwich giving praise and thanks for everyone's involvement.

A most wonderful experience was had by all those that participated in this years exchange and the Droitwich Spa Boys & Girls Football Club very much look forward to visiting Arzbach in the Spring of 2011.  Once again, many new friendships were made and existing friendships deepened.
